Very closely related to the Ioniq 5 crossover SUV and Kia EV6 , it rides on the same E-GMP architecture, has the same 400V/800V ultra-fast charging capability, same (in Long Range guise) 77.4kWh battery and same 239kW/605Nm from its twin motors. Even if you’re not taken by its looks, the Ioniq 6’s range makes headlines.

So instead it’s hybrid and EV tech for Kia’s new entry-level electrified SUV. But even as a hybrid the Niro doesn’t come particularly cheap. Kia Niro EV GT-Line is capped at around 100kW for charging. The Niro has the industry standard CCS combo plug that utilises the Type 2 system for slower AC charging.

Audi RS models – performance flagships set to pick up plug-in hybrid tech as early as 2021. BMW M cars – they’re coming with hybrid drivetrains. And if we’re guessing, we reckon it could be called the Ranger Lightning (see above). Audi RS e-Tron GT. Likely to arrive in Australia late in 2021.

It’s mind-blowing, if not quite in the re-wire brain territory of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S. If you want to keep the tyre mobility kit and power cable bags in the boot, this also eats into space. Very cool and ideal to charge phones, your laptop, coffee machine, widescreen TV or even bar fridge. That’s daft acceleration.

None of this quartet is cheap, but all are towards the value end of the EV market. The $6000 Plus pack brings a panoramic sunroof, full power operation of the front seats, heated rear seats and wireless phone charging. Dual digital displays also dominate the dash, while there’s smart key entry, navigation and wireless phone charging.

The charge port door also electrically rises with a gentle tap, while the GV60 can self-park using the smartkey. There’s a household socket under the rear seats (I plugged the Nespresso machine in here), and another on the charge cable, ideal for things like an electric bike. A tech too far? A brace of 12.3-inch
