Batteries from electric bus route 55 in Gothenburg, Sweden are being used for solar energy storage in a second-life application. The reuse and recycling of batteries is a key issue as increasing numbers of cities plan transition to electrically powered transport. IRIS is a Light House project, financed by EU HORIZON 2020.

The batteries get charged when power is cheap; when there's low wind and no sun, energy prices may start to spike, and the batteries can discharge the power back into the grid, balancing the constant change of supply and demand, and trading on the difference to make a business. That would be something to reckon with.

So that leaves gas with the task of keeping the lights on. This was plain wrong.

Every company is going to be faced with that issue, whether or not they make light-duty and medium- and heavy-duty EVs, because the battery manufacturers are also going to look at quantity and volume, and if they can sell at a higher volume to light-duty and consumer vehicles, then they’ll be less interested in providing packs for larger EVs.
