Honda Motor Company will introduce a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and a new plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) to the US market in 2012, said President & CEO Takanobu Ito in his mid-year address in Tokyo, Japan. The first one will be the Fit Hybrid which will be introduced to the Japanese market this fall. Battery electric vehicle.

Plenty of public charging in what's come to be called Voltageville. We chose the solar-powered Park n Ride just off 80. The EV chargers one-half block from the RAN rally at which I was to speak were charging other RAV4 EVs, so I drove to another parking garage 2 blocks away. Plenty of available chargers there. Total cost: $6.

They reinforce the Pacific National Labs January 2007 findings that we wont have to build new power plants for cars that charge at night. Plus more people are installing rooftop solar photovoltaic systems, and clean wind power is vastly expanding nationally (see study by eminent environmentalist Lester Brown cited at CalCars Kudos ).

In Europe, the likes of the Yaris and the iQ have kept average fuel consumption levels low, while Toyota is working on several new concepts such as the FT-EV (see article ) which has a claimed range of 50miles per charge. When sales of the Civic Hybrid started to flag, Honda introduced the Insight Hybrid earlier this year.

A January 2007 Pacific National Laboratory study shows that if we woke up tomorrow and all our vehicles could plug in, todays grid could support more than three-quarters of them charging at night without building a single power plant. I love the idea of powering my car from solar power. How about a car-mounted wind-generator?
