The US Environmental Agency (EPA) has granted California’s waiver request enabling the state to enforce its greenhouse gas emissions standards (Pavley I) for new motor vehicles, beginning with the current model year. California requested from EPA the waiver required for implementation of the Pavley regulations in December 2005.

Back in 1999, when we were all a twitter about Y2K, there were about 5,000 production EVs on California roads with a few dozen more in both Arizona and Georgia. After a federal tax credit and state rebate, the price of these cars will come out at around a cool 20k. California offers a $5,000 rebate through the state Air Resources Board, which reduces the price to $20,280. Americans who have been waiting for an affordable, all-electric car won’t have to wait much longer.
