The morning session started out with an hour long press conference, the highlight being the unveiling of the Volt’s 230 mpg preliminary EPA city fuel economy finding ( earlier post ), as well as a tour showing selected elements from the studios of the four GM North American brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. The auto industry is now gearing up to hash out those standards at the SAE conference in Detroit next week — and GM has a major stake in getting them out swiftly. And for this ecosystem to be robust, there must be commonality, especially when owners are plugging into the electrical grid.

Some will be electric-only, others will be extended-range vehicles in which a gasoline engine will generate electricity on board after about 40 miles of driving on a fully charged battery. The plan is to produce the battery packs as modules that can be easily combined and arranged for different uses in a variety of vehicles.

Linguistically, they’re talking about “plug-ins” rather than quibbling about plug-in hybrids vs. extended range EVs.
