The new Mitsubishi Triton is joining the petrol-electric plug-in hybrid rush alongside the 2024 BYD ute and 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV. Mitsubishi does plug-in hybrids (like in the Outlander ), Toyota does conventional hybrids (like the RAV4 ), and Nissan does e-Power. And that means it’s not cheap. In Ti guise, that means 19-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting front and rear with matrix headlights, a panoramic sunroof, privacy glass at the rear and a powered boot.

Firstly, it’s designed around the new EV platform developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. The Renault is relatively light for an EV its size, too.

There are also some big brands that have so far not dabbled in the EV space in Australia readying their first battery electric models. It won’t be cheap, but Audi’s e-Tron GT and its more potent RS e-Tron GT sibling promise big performance. As with the Atto 3 and Dolphin, the Seal gets BYD’s in-house Blade battery pack.

In my “working” life (people get very angry when I call driving new cars work), there are a very few “this changes everything” moments, but I just had one when testing the alarmingly good, and relatively cheap, MG4. Years ago, I remember driving my first ever EV, a Mitsubishi WhywhywhyMiEV I think it was called, and hating it enormously.
