Nearly all of the world’s ship fleet still runs on diesel fuel, with about a quarter of new ships on order being built to run on somewhat lower-carbon alternatives like liquefied natural gas, methanol, or hybrid propulsion. The majority of global shipbuilding happens in South Korea, Japan, and China.

Three key General Motors executives involved with the Chevrolet Volt this week held a media briefing on the state of GM’s battery pack strategy for the Chevrolet Volt and its current Gen 1 pack as well as subsequent generations (Gen 2 and Gen 3) of battery packs destined for the underlying Voltec platform.

The first several months’ worth of EV9s will be built in South Korea, but US production will start sometime during 2024 in West Point, Georgia. That clears the first hurdle to qualify Kia’s electric three-row utility for the $7,500 federal purchase incentive (details on battery minerals and assembly are yet to be revealed).

Hyundai Motor reportedly plans on using preexisting investments slated for its new EV facility in Georgia to pivot toward hybrid vehicles, as all-electric models haven’t seen the kind of adoption rates that would warrant an entire factory — let alone the plant that will become its largest outside of South Korea.
