Designed specifically for a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, Nissan LEAF is a medium-size hatchback that comfortably seats five adults and has a range of 100 miles on a city drive cycle (LA4). Projects include: $70 million to Chrysler to develop, validate and deploy 220 plug-in hybrid electric pickups and minivans.

What they got wrong was assuming that all of those vehicles would run on battery power alone, with gasoline-electric hybrid technology bound for the technological scrap heap. The Ramcharger still packs more battery power than many all-electric vehicles, such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model 3.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. When Lutz first proposed creating an electric car in 2003, the idea "bombed" inside GM, he says. "I todays answer is "Yes -- but not yet."

0:00 / 4:40 Battery power for Chrysler The Circuit will be a purely plug-in car - there will be no gas tank or gasoline engine at all - with an expected range of 150 to 200 miles on a full charge. Possibilities include a minivan and an Jeep Wrangler-like off-roader. They will also differ greatly in terms of vehicle type.

Thankfully, since parts of the powertrain in the Circuit are also used in other Chrysler ENVI vehicles - like the all-electric USPS minivan that was unveiled earlier today - work that is done on one model can be applied to others. For now, if you want to keep moving, you need to keep pressing go. No coasting available.
