In China, Wuling launched its first electric minivan, the Rong Guang EV, and Chevrolet launched four new Monza variants featuring 48V mild hybrid technology. With the same dimensions as its siblings powered by traditional internal combustion engines and a 3,050-millimeter wheelbase, the Rong Guang EV offers 5.1 Rong Guang EV.

Exceeding its initial program targets, the plug-in 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid ( earlier post ) has earned an electric-mode fuel economy rating of 84 miles-per-gallon-equivalent (MPGe) from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Department of Energy to develop a test fleet of 220 hybrid pickup trucks and minivans, vehicles now scrapped in the sweeping turnaround plan for Chrysler announced this week by Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne. But the battery-powered two-wheelers get separate showrooms, sales methodologies and marketing programs aimed at different target audience. These European designs are perfectly good EVs, although their limited battery range and high price compared to the gasoline versions are major drawbacks. I’m hoping for the latter.

In an interview Monday, Mr. Ghosn said Nissan decided to accelerate development of battery-powered vehicles because of high gasoline prices and environmental concerns, not just because of the need to meet stricter fuel-economy standards. Nissan also expects to sell a lineup of electric vehicles globally by 2012. Ford ( F ).

will unveil the Nissan Serena e-POWER, a new version of the popular minivan featuring the company’s e-POWER electric drive system ( earlier post ), at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. The Serena e-POWER will be Nissan’s second model to feature the technology. e-POWER borrows from the EV technology in the Nissan LEAF.
