Porsche’s first all-electric sports car, the Taycan, made its world premiere at three simultaneous events in Canada, China and Germany. The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260 km/h (162 mph). In internal combustion engine vehicles, the kinetic energy present at the brakes is converted into heat during deceleration.

The German federal government is targeting one million electric vehicles in Germany by 2020. The flow of electrical energy is regulated by a high-voltage power distribution unit, which, like the battery, is located at the rear of the Golf Variant. Whenever necessary, the battery can also be charged via the generator.

During a media event in Wolfsburg, Germany, Volkswagen provided a medium dive into details of its two-seater XL1 Super Efficient Vehicle diesel plug-in hybrid ( earlier post ) as well as some driving time on local roads and highways. The battery comprises 60 25Ah cells, with a carbon-fiber case. Power and torque curves for the XL1.

kWh Li-ion battery pack—acceleration improves by about 9% (0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds); system power is up by 25% to 400 hp; and system torque is up 60% to 472 lb-ft. Analysis of the data yielded engine torque and engine speed distribution (for the World and for Germany) that gave the engineers practical boundary targets.

The Q7 e-tron quattro features a six-cylinder TDI engine and quattro drive that deliver 275 kW (373 hp) of system power and 700 N·m (516.3 mph) as long as traffic is slow-moving. The Q7 PHEV will arrive in dealerships in Germany in 2016, and will likely come to the US, although perhaps with a gasoline-engine variant.

In Germany prices for the smart fortwo electric drive start at €21,940 (US$23,077)—recommended retail price including 19% VAT. Powered by a 17.6 kWh Li-ion battery pack, the electric drive has a range (NEDC) of approximately 160 km (99 miles); maximum speed is electronically limited to 130 km/h (81 mph) to maximize the range.
