Micro hybrid vehicles are traditional gasoline- or diesel-powered cars with automatic, battery-powered stop-start systems that shut off the engine while the vehicle is at rest and restart it upon re-engaging the gas pedal. Nickel-zinc batteries are chemically very similar to nickel-cadmium, NiCd.

The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. It’s expected to cost roughly 150,000 yuan ($ 22,000 ), and go as far as 70 miles (110 kilometers) on electricity when fully charged. Automakers are now on board.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles.
