Mitsubishi will introduce 8 xEVs by FY 2015. For the uninformed, the question was: Does the battery need to be plugged in to a hybrid car charger ? Fast-forward about 10 years and a new type of hybrid came on the scene—the plug-in hybrid, and it does require plugging in to charge the onboard battery to maximize efficiency (without plugging in it functions like a normal hybrid).

Those who make the decisions to forgo battery EVs in favor of plug- in hybrids only ignore a sizable market. Cheap to run but expensive to buy, they offer theprospect of low or zero carbon emissions, but manufacturers won’t sell themunless motorists want to buy them – and motorists won’t buy unless the priceis right and there are enough places to charge the batteries. Car buyers were less enthusiastic.
