It's a 2002 Saturn SL1 with 220,000 miles and a rough engine, however it still runs. In the end I went with what was available and what I could afford. Like the Chinese say "a journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step" well I have made my first step! I have bought my donor car. Attached Thumbnails.

The first two vehicles available for AMP conversions are the GM Saturn Sky and the GM Pontiac Solstice. The end product is an all-electric vehicle with a range of up to 150 miles per charge. The pack carries a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. AMP expects the battery packs to retain 80% of their capacity up to 100,000 miles.

The “AMP’d” Equinox is an up-fitted GM Chevrolet Equinox that will reach a top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h), and will accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in approximately eight seconds. While people can purchase neighborhood electric vehicles today for about $10K, they only have a top speed of 35 miles an hour or so, essentially glorified golf-carts. All the commercially available freeway-capable (70 mph) EVs are priced way out of reach for the average consumer.

General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. In early testing, the plug-in hybrid is capable of electric-only propulsion for more than 10 miles at low speeds.

Though 12 miles is well short of the 40 plus miles of the upcoming Chevy Volt, the costs associated with the hybrid system should also fall well short of the Volts costly power train. The plug-in version will only be available for fleet service and will not be sold at retail to the general public.

The Saturn version of the two-mode plug-in hybrid at the Milford Proving Grounds. GM is producing 2 vehicles a day with the goal of having a total of 76 vehicles available by the end of the summer; these vehicles will be used for validation testing ranging from fit and finish reviews, to durability testing to eventual crash testing.
