A study by a team at MIT has concluded that roughly 90% of the personal vehicles on the road in the US could be replaced by an electric vehicle available on the market today, even if the cars can only charge overnight. Together, the two datasets encompass millions of trips made by drivers all around the country.

The study was conducted in September 2013 among 2,041 US adults, among whom 1,629 identified themselves as regular drivers, driving their own personal vehicle at least once a once week or more often. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.
