According to Velozzi, the cars will operate on 100% battery power in zero-emissions mode for a range of up to 200 miles. Then, when the batteries reach a pre-determined state of discharge, the Capstone microturbine will recharge the batteries on the fly to extend the driving range up to 1,000 miles.

General Motors and LG Group will jointly design and engineer future electric vehicles, expanding a relationship built on LG’s work as the battery cell supplier for the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera extended-range EVs. For LG, the arrangement represents a widening of its portfolio as an automotive solution provider.

Newer EVs have larger battery capacities, allowing for longer ranges and protecting against performance losses. Plug-in hybrids can mitigate cold weather concerns as they are also gas-powered for extended range. This may be an important feature for drivers in rural areas who routinely drive long distances.
