In an open-access paper published in Scientific Reports , a team from Fraunhofer ISI and KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) has presented the first systematic overview of empirical findings on the electrification of vehicle mileage based on on actual PHEV (plug-in hybrid) and BEV (battery-electric vehicle) usage for the US and Germany.

If all automobiles are replaced by electric vehicles, 697 TWh/year would be required to power the entire fleet in the US and 60 TWh/year would be needed to power the Brazilian fleet. These consumption values are modest when compared to the present electricity use in both countries (3,741 TWh, and 466 TWh, respectively).

EPA and NHTSA worked closely with the California Air Resources Board (ARB) in developing an Interim Joint Technical Assessment Report (TAR) of potential 2017-2025 scenarios. Tags: Climate Change Emissions Fuel Efficiency Policy. The two agencies expect to issue a proposal by 30 September 2011.
