It shares an all-new platform with the purely petrol Outlander version. litre combustion petrol engine allied with twin electric motors, a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack and all-wheel-drive. For a plug-in hybrid it is, but those prices are some $15,000 more than the equivalent Outlander petrol versions. Is it good value?

We will get to how it all works in a moment, but the short version is that, while you still get a petrol engine with your electric motors, the former is only used to recharge the battery or deliver power to the motors — it never actually drives the wheels — giving you what Nissan calls an “EV-like” drive experience, and improved fuel efficiency.

Unlike the recently launched Genesis GV60 – which is built on a bespoke EV architecture – the GV70 Electrified takes the familiar underpinnings of a GV70 running on petrol or diesel and adapts them to EV life. It comes with a safety triangle, a first aid kit, eight airbags and active bonnet to prevent injuries to pedestrians.

But whereas the EV6 is based on a dedicated EV architecture, the Niro relies on an ICE platform to allow for the petrol engine for the hybrid model. Sharing its basic layout and compact SUV body with the petrol-powered models that hit the market in 2023, the Chery Omoda 5 EV gets a unique front-end design that appears to improve aerodynamics. None of this quartet is cheap, but all are towards the value end of the EV market. It’s an unbranded system designed in-house by Tesla, but it’s a quality bit of audio kit. But it loses points for its lack of gear in its base guise and the compromises of starting with a platform that was designed for petrol.

But after interviewing Ford’s Nancy Gioia at the recent Detroit Auto show, I’m now unsure of both the timescales involved, or how much the power and auto companies are behind it as a fundamental concept. That will solve these problems, not big government, big auto or big energy. — AH2 14.
