Currently, hybrid cars in India that use a petrol engine and an electric motor combined with an electric battery pack are slapped with as high as a 43 per cent tax, while pure petrol cars see a 48 per cent tax. The Japanese automaker has been claiming that hybrid cars reduce carbon emissions compared to petrol ones.

In contrast, hatchback models have plummeted to 14 from 26 in the same period, with the discontinuation of beloved cars such as Hyundai Santro, Honda Jazz, Volkswagen Polo, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, and more. According to Srivatsa, the increase in the used-cars market is a great growth indicator for the industry.

And EV straggler Honda shed a bit more light on its upcoming EVs built on GM’s Ultium battery and powertrain platform. Honda of America sales chief Dave Gardner told reporters one of the electric SUVs will be from the Honda brand, while the other will be an Acura. Honda will offer more details later this year, he said.

One Bloomberg study found 341 miles was the average range desired, while Deloitte Consulting’s 2022 Global Automotive Consumer Study found US consumers want to be able to travel 518 miles on a fully charged battery in a BEV that costs $50,000 or less. How much range is enough? Arguments over how much range is needed are contentious.

Lutz is a man given to hyperbole — called global warming "a crock of shit" — but in this case, hes right. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. Honda has probably sold more Civics in a year than the combined total of all 18 of those GM models.
