The program backs automotive companies that offer both green energy initiatives, such as increased fuel efficiency, and new auto industry jobs in the United States.

Lutz, who retired earlier this year, called the car Detroits "moon shot" and an attempt to wrest the mantle of innovation back from the Japanese.
