Although competitive Chinese automaker BYD isn’t yet slated to enter the U.S. BYD launched its Seagull, a small hatchback EV with a price tag starting at 69,800 yuan (~$9,773), at the Shanghai Auto Show last year. BYD Europe aims to beat Tesla and other prominent EU automakers, like Volkswagen and Stellantis. BYD European boss Michael Shu made bold claims during the Financial Times’ Future of the Car Summit. BYD Europe wants to triple its market in the region by 2025. It also plans to partner with European dealerships.

A new government and a change in mindset made 2022 a significant year for electric cars. Polestar and BYD were two of the new EV brands that arrived during the year and brands as diverse as Volkswagen and GWM confirmed their intention to start selling electric vehicles here in 2023. The BYD Atto 3 was my biggest surprise of 2022.

Previously, all cars made in China were subject to a 25% tariff when imported to the US, on top of an additional 2.5% tariff that all foreign-made cars were subject to, totaling 27.5%. This large tariff has had the effect of excluding most Chinese autos from the US market, as it’s easier to export to countries with lower tariffs first.

The purpose of the new tariffs is to prevent American automakers from needing to compete head to head with Chinese automakers, whose lower cost electric vehicles could otherwise make their way stateside and catch the US auto industry with its pants down.

France’s auto industry is probably the largest Western auto industry that goes completely under the radar in the US. Only Old World savants here have even heard of these brands, which crank out millions and millions of cars per year. In South America BYD seems the only E-bus act in town. I have no idea.
