Currently only two EVs in the US are made in China, the Polestar 2 and Volvo S90 Recharge Plug-in Hybrid. But with these increased tariffs, that makes it less likely that US consumers will gain access to these cheap, high-tech Chinese EVs. Most of these tariffs go into effect this year, though some will be imposed next year.

And oil only seems cheap. When our country was attacked at Pearl Harbor, no one believed we could build 30,000 planes and tanks in just one year. Well, America’s auto industry delivered over 100,000. That helped us become the world’s greatest industrial power. Its impacts are increasingly unaffordable.

And while it’s improved, the build quality doesn’t match the big boys (you don’t have to look far to spot glitches). I dunno if it’s the biggest surprise, but the most pleasing news of 2022 was the way the irrepressible die-hards in what remains of the Aussie auto industry leapt on the opportunity EV presents.

It was started by a chemist and government researcher named Wang Chuan-Fu in 1995 (same year as Yahoo) to make rechargeable batteries, which it learned to do very well. Within a few years, BYD’s batteries were cheaper and just as reliable as those made by industry giants ony and Sanyo. BYD is an amazing company.

Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles [EV], plug-in hybrids [PHEV] and fuel cell vehicles [FCV] at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit. Utilities could avoid building more dirty peaking power plants.
