Plug-in hybrids pollute up to three times more than advertised, even when fully charged, and emit five to seven times as much CO2 when the engine is running, according to a new study commissioned by Belgian NGO Transport & Environment and conducted by the University of Technology in Graz, Austria.

Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and battery-electric vehicles (BEV) continued to increase—last year by 42%. The average fuel efficiency of gasoline cars has been constant in the last two years; whereas the fuel-efficiency of diesel cars has worsened, compared to 2016 (116.8 g CO 2 /km).
