The US reached separate agreements with the G-20 and with China to address the rapid growth in the use and release of climate-damaging hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Left unabated, HFC emissions could grow to nearly 20% of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, a serious climate mitigation concern.

A coalition of 16 national hydrogen associations from around the world recently issued a joint statement addressed to Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change, asserting that hydrogen technologies could help to curb global greenhouse gas emissions. The United Nations Secretary General and the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced have asked the InterAcademy Council (IAC) to conduct an independent review of the IPCC’s processes and procedures to further strengthen the quality of the Panel’s reports on climate change.

The inaugural meeting of the G-20 took place in Berlin, on December 15-16, 1999, hosted by German and Canadian finance ministers.
