Fuel economy is EPA rated at 24 mpg city, 28 highway, 25 combined. The mild hybrid system consists of a 48-volt electrical system that allows the engine to shut off when not needed, increasing fuel economy. There’s a second location in Corte Madera in Marin County. The freeway jaunt was to San Rafael, in Marin County, which meant open freeways, bridge crossings and a short test loop through town, where I showed off the car’s rocket acceleration to my son. Of course, the EPA “green” scores are 10 for both Smog and Greenhouse Gas.

A year ago Ford nabbed a significant endorsement from the Sierra Club for its limited edition Mercury Mariner hybrid (29/35 mpg - gasoline only) and a promise of 250,000 hybrids by 2010. Ethanol is the alternative fuels flavor of the month, and Ford jumped on GM’s yellow bandwagon. Ford has now done an abrupt about face.
