The City of New York will invest $420 million in electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and alternative fuels to accelerate the transition to an all-electric municipal vehicle fleet. New York City operates nearly 30,000 vehicles, the largest municipal fleet in the country.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Verizon announced that Verizon has replaced 234 of its existing gasoline-powered vans with hybrid-electric vans for use in New York City. We thank NYSERDA for their partnership in helping to make this happen.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio last week issued an executive order specifying the attainment of an all-electric “carbon-neutral” fleet by the year 2040. New York City operates more than 30,000 owned and leased vehicles (on-road and off-road), the largest municipal fleet in the United States.

If successful, the Bronx-based project is expected to bring a production version of the converted truck to the streets of New York City by Spring 2018. In addition to producing a new, cost-effective all-electric conversion kit, the project will deliver a blueprint for converting up to three UPS vehicles a day.

In converting the standard delivery vehicles, the powertrain equipment, including the engine, transmission, fuel tank and drive shaft, were replaced with a Cummins 6.7L ISB EPA 07 200-hp (149 kW) EGR diesel engine and Eaton hybrid-electric system, with Li-ion batteries for energy storage.
