The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Verizon announced that Verizon has replaced 234 of its existing gasoline-powered vans with hybrid-electric vans for use in New York City. We thank NYSERDA for their partnership in helping to make this happen.

If successful, the Bronx-based project is expected to bring a production version of the converted truck to the streets of New York City by Spring 2018. In addition to producing a new, cost-effective all-electric conversion kit, the project will deliver a blueprint for converting up to three UPS vehicles a day.

The Pacifica Hybrid has a regenerative braking system, which recharges the 16-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion (li-ion) battery. So driving around town, stuck in stop-and-go rush hour highway traffic, or coasting down hills recharges the battery. The battery recharge and electric mile range are metered instantly by dash gauges.

There are already spaces in New York City and Los Angeles, and there are now two in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I’m located. The Launch Edition features two motors, one up front and one in the rear, powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour battery. That’s pretty normal for a battery of this size in 2021.
