Positively put, they offer emissions-free electric driving most of the time, but a petrol engine backup when you need it – very handy, thanks. But is Mazda about to go big on PHEVs as markets – including Australia – increasingly want to swerve the half-way house and commit to a full battery electric car ?

Perhaps more interesting than the ride, at least for some electro-geeks, are some of the pictures Doug took of the battery pack on display that will go into the electric smarts. I wish the thing was for sale as-is. For 20k at that size it should have been electric to begin with. o well I guess they think all yanks hate diesels.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Daimler/Mercedes Took over Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter PHEV program. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna.

There are proponents of each method and, though all three could be used, it is possible that one or more might never make it in the real world or that another method might come to the fore. Currently, there are some industrial facilities that use battery swapping to replenish the energy stores of electric forklifts.
