Medium-sized battery-electric cars are on average 14% cheaper to run than equivalent diesels today, if slow charging overnight near home and/or fast charging at preferential rates are available. T&E’s lifecycle CO 2 emission calculator estimates that today EVs cut CO 2 emissions by two-thirds on average across Europe compared to diesel cars.

As expected, the combination of fewer diesel registrations and more SUVs continued to have an impact on emissions. Despite an increase of EV models contributing positively to emission levels, the move away from diesel had a negative impact, one that the market could not offset. BEVs for every diesel car registered.

A ban on all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles made its way through the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 1. Proposed in July 2021, Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Romania all pushed to delay the sales ban in mid-2022. According to Reuters , the existing target is 37.5 percent.

Electric cars remain dependent on the development of better,affordable batteries. It ispleasingly quick but will still only manage 150 miles between charges, muchless than a tank of petrol, even if it costs only £1.50 to charge overnight. The electric Mini is unlikely to go into production in its present form.
