Over the past several years, demand among American consumers has shifted from wagons to SUVs. Through the first half of 2019, SUVs account for 47% of the industry sales, and more than 50% of Volkswagen sales. Volkswagen plans to release three new SUV models in the next 24 months.

Nissan announced that cumulative sales of vehicles with its e-POWER electrified powertrain ( earlier post ) surpassed 500,000 units at the end of March. Nissan launched the all-new Note Aura premium compact car in Japan, with sales planned to start in autumn. In April, Nissan announced cumulative e-POWER sales of more than 500,000 units. e-POWER uses a highly efficient gasoline engine to generate electricity for the electric motor that propels the vehicle.

Fifty-six models of electric-drive vehicles were available in model year (MY) 2018 in the US. Together, small sport utility vehicles (SUV), standard SUVs and minivans accounted for another quarter. One quarter of the models were midsize cars, followed by large cars at 16% and compact cars at 14%.

Sales volumes in December were up year-over-year by more than 5% but down from November, due in part to improved supply. Elevated prices and high loan rates are putting downward pressure on sales. Truck sales were particularly strong last month, and with many trucks selling for more than $60,000, a new record was all but inevitable.
