Mercedes-Benz Cars is starting construction of its first “Full-Flex Plant“ in Kecskemét, Hungary, about 90 km in the south of Budapest. With an investment of one billion euros, we are building in Hungary the first ‘Full-Flex Plant’ in the global production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

While development of the principle is ongoing, Audi has begun to use modular assembly in developing the production process for the electric motor for the 2018 e-tron SUV (C-BEV) ( earlier post ). Modular assembly uses 19 island stations, some of which are used several times within the build process.

Rumors started brewing about the future of the plant in two years ago, when Ford made the call to build its next-gen EVs in Spain and not reboot and retrain workers at Saarlouis. BYD was reported to be among the companies interested, but the Chinese automaker has since announced it is opening its first European plant in Hungary.

The compact SUV EQB will be the first purely electrically powered production vehicle from Hungary and will complement the plug-in hybrid portfolio consisting of the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake. In Factory 56 the S-Class and, in the future, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, and the EQS will be produced in a fully flexible manner on the same line.
