Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Ames Laboratory have discovered a method for making smaller, more efficient intermetallic nanoparticles for fuel cell applications, and which also use less of the expensive precious metal platinum. A paper on the work is published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Fuel ethanol production capacity in the United States reached more than 16 billion gallons per year, or 1.06 million barrels per day (b/d), at the beginning of 2018, according to EIA’s most recent US Fuel Ethanol Plant Production Capacity report. Most of the US fuel ethanol production capacity is located in the Midwest region (PADD 2).

Fuel ethanol production capacity in the United States reached 15.5 million barrels per day (b/d), at the beginning of 2017, according to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) most recent US Fuel Ethanol Plant Production Capacity report. Of the top 13 fuel ethanol-producing states, 12 are located in the Midwest.

US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) will invest up to $100 million in a Biofuels Infrastructure Partnership to support the infrastructure needed to make more renewable fuel options available to American consumers.
