CRU forecasts global battery electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) and hybrid electric (HEV) sales will increase to 42 million vehicles worldwide by 2030. Sales of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) grew by more than 40% year on year globally in 2016. For rolled products, it is mostly the light weight benefit.

The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), a subset of the electric car, combines a primary electric motor with a much smaller back-up engine fueled with a hydrocarbon/biofuel mix. (In In this paper PHEV refers solely to the long-range PHEV of 60 miles (100 km) electric-only range.) It is much more than that.

The REEV or PHEV also may present opportunities for more novel power sources such as turbines (Wrightspeed), fuel cell stacks (Nissan) or aluminum-air batteries (Phinergy and Arconic), speakers suggested. If PHEVs are going to play a big role, what is the fuel source for that? How efficient will it be? Not the only one.

The ZEV regulation—along with new LEV III criteria pollutant and GHG standards—can be the catalyst to the process of transforming the California light-duty fleet, ARB staff suggests. The standard targets would reduce car CO 2 emissions by about 36% and truck CO 2 emissions by about 32% from model year 2016 through 2025.
