Boston Public Schools will operate 11% of its bus fleet with Blue Bird propane autogas buses, starting with the 2015-2016 school year. The school district is purchasing 86 Blue Bird Propane Vision school buses, and hopes to convert more of their diesel fleet to propane buses in the future.

Transitioning the fleet to all electric will eliminate emissions from diesel buses and emissions from shipping diesel fuel by barge 900 miles from Seattle. All of the replacements are diesel powered heavy-duty buses that are past their twelve-year life span. The buses will replace diesel buses that have exceeded useful life.

There will be 800 New Routemasters on London’s streets by 2016 and they will reduce CO 2 emissions in the Capital by around 27,500 tonnes a year. This is part of the Mayor’s plan to halve NO x emissions from the bus fleet by the end of his term in office in 2016, compared to 2008. Earlier post.)

The PHEV does not require the heavy, costly batteries required by other electric cars, nor does it suffer from a limited range or poor freeway performance. Though the PHEV combines the two types of energy and power, it is not merely a temporary “transition” between gasoline and diesel cars to pure electric cars.
