The school district is purchasing 86 Blue Bird Propane Vision school buses, and hopes to convert more of their diesel fleet to propane buses in the future. The district’s autogas fleet will emit 66,000 fewer pounds of nitrogen oxide and 2,700 fewer pounds of particulate matter each year, when compared to the diesel buses they are replacing.

Transitioning the fleet to all electric will eliminate emissions from diesel buses and emissions from shipping diesel fuel by barge 900 miles from Seattle. All of the replacements are diesel powered heavy-duty buses that are past their twelve-year life span. The buses will replace diesel buses that have exceeded useful life.

European markets also have access to an extended range of Euro 5 and EEV engines with SCR technology. The vast majority of Scania diesel engines can operate on up to 100% biodiesel (FAME fuel according to EN14214), contributing to a reduction of CO 2 emissions by around 35%. The engines can operate on up to 100% biodiesel.

Cleaner buses have contributed to important steps forward in air quality for Londoners, including halving the number of Londoners living in areas above nitrogen dioxide limits, and a reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions by 20% and emissions of particulate matter down by 15%.

The PHEV does not require the heavy, costly batteries required by other electric cars, nor does it suffer from a limited range or poor freeway performance. Though the PHEV combines the two types of energy and power, it is not merely a temporary “transition” between gasoline and diesel cars to pure electric cars.

For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded.
