North European Bio Tech Oy (NEB) has made an investment decision concerning the construction of a bioethanol plant on the Renforsin Ranta industrial estate in Kajaani, Finland. Implementation planning will begin immediately, and construction will be launched in summer 2015. The plant is projected to begin production in mid-2016.

The pilot plant will be located at Stora Enso’s Sunila Mill in Finland. This investment is another step on our transformation journey to explore new ways to replace fossil-based, scarce and high-cost materials with renewable alternatives. Stora Enso has been producing lignin industrially at its Sunila Mill in Finland since 2015.

Novozymes will supply enzyme technology to a new biorefinery that will be built by St1 Biofuels in Kajaani, Finland. To be co-located at a sawmill site, the plant will be the first facility in the world to use sawdust from softwood as feedstock to produce cellulosic ethanol at commercial scale.

Neste Oil celebrated the official opening of Europe’s first pilot plant for producing microbial oil from waste and residues at its site in Porvoo, Finland. Microbial oil produced from industrial and agricultural residues such as straw represents one of the most promising future raw materials for NExBTL renewable diesel, the company said.

Neste Oil and St1 have begun working together on a fuel project as part of the TransEco development program coordinated by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The oil industry has proposed increasing the biocomponent content of traffic fuels in Finland on a phased basis to 10% by 2015.
