And oil only seems cheap. We’ve already decided we’re going to fix already-built houses, offices and factories that waste energy. We won’t need new power plants, since we have enough off-peak electricity to recharge as many retrofits as we can build. But let’s realize: defending our nation is never cheap.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) last week launched the 2011 edition of the World Energy Outlook (WEO), the current edition of its annual flagship publication assessing the threats and opportunities facing the global energy system out to 2035. Subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption of fossil fuels jumped to over $400 billion.

Millions will plug-in their electric vehicles [EV], plug-in hybrids [PHEV] and fuel cell vehicles [FCV] at night when electricity is cheap, then plug-in during the day when energy is expensive and sell those extra electrons at a profit. Electric vehicles will be available for customers in 2011.
