The Yano Research Institute estimates that more than 10 million cars worldwide will be equipped with stop-start systems in 2015, compared with some 900,000 in 2009. Shin-Kobe is expanding a Chinese battery factory this fiscal year, doubling the annual production capacity to 2 million units.

After remaining flat during the past three years, owner satisfaction with new-vehicle performance and design in China has improved from 2009, fueled by intense competition between brands and models in the market, according to the J.D. The overall APEAL score in 2010 averages 807 on a 1,000-point scale, increasing by eight points from 2009.

When asked to predict global market share winners over the next five years, Ford jumped to 43% seeing market share gains compared with 29% in 2010 and 13% in 2009. The vehicle categories seeing the most significant response increases in the 2011 survey compared with 2010 were SUVs, luxury vehicles, large pick-up trucks, and cross-overs.

SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW), GM’s mini-commercial vehicle joint venture with SAIC and Wuling Motors, is launching the Baojun brand (Boajun is the Chinese word for “treasured horse”). It will enable us to better address the increasingly segmented Chinese vehicle market. The passenger cars of the new brand will be built and sold in China.

General Motors China and its joint ventures sold 814,442 vehicles in China in the first half of 2009.
