In Portugal, the hybrid energy storage system has been successfully used in passenger services since November 2008. The Sitras HES hybrid energy storage system consists of two energy-storing components: the Sitras MES mobile energy storage unit (double-layer capacitor, DLC) and a nickel-metal hydride battery.

Insertion-electrodes employed in nickel metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries experience significant volume changes during charging and discharging caused by concentration changes within the host particles. Electrode failure can occur as a result of localized stress and strain energy.

In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. Volvo Ford-owned company exploring PHEVs "ReCharge" flex-fuel series 60-mile concept PHEV w/wheel motors. Batteries not ready. Has shown some concept fuel-cell PHEVs.
