For reference, a typical lead acid battery can survive 500-800 cycles while 2,800 cycles is almost 8 years of use assuming one cycle a day. In May 2008, the Telegraph newspaper in the UK reported that British drivers paid 57 pence/liter or $2.99/ gallon of diesel in excise tax which doesn’t include the value added tax.

at least, the recycling infrastructure for the well-established lead-acid batteries is robust. lead-acid batteries have a far better recycling rate than even aluminum bottles — over 90% of lead-acid batteries are recycled. None of the new electric cars are planning to use old-tech lead acid batteries.

If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. 80 miles was the range of the EV1 with Lead Acid batteries, that GM tried to use because they wanted the project to fail. it was the first batch of EV1s that they tried to use lead acid batteries and developed problems.
