Replacement of up to 90% (270 Mt) of the total global consumption of plastics in 2007 with bio-based plastics is ultimately technically possible, according to new study by authors at Utrecht University, commissioned by the associations European Bioplastics and the European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE). Batteries accounted for 27% of global lithium consumption in 2012, up from 15% in 2007 and 8% in 2002. Other end-uses, including glass-ceramics, greases and polymers, have also shown high rates of growth, but are predicted to moderate over the next five years as emerging economy growth slows.

Bio-hydrocarbons Bio-hydrogen Bio-polymers Biomass Biorefinery Fuels' EERE plans to issue the FOA on or about 24 February 2014.

The conversion of endogenously synthesized l-phenylalanine to styrene was achieved by the co-expression of phenylalanine ammonia lyase and trans-cinnamate decarboxylase. US consumption of styrene in 2006 was 9,600 million pounds, > 99% of which was consumed in the production of polymers and copolymers.
