The catalytic converter that keeps the ICE from being a gross polluter in conventional cars and hybrids however, isn't kept warm by the continual embrace of an ever-churning engine in a hybrid with all-electric range. However, unfortunately green-minded consumers are again left confused.

Consequently, gasoline-power vehicles pollute the most when the engine is first turned on in the morning after being off for many hours. They also appear to be somewhat capricious.

Twenty-three percent describe regional air pollution as a big problem, an 11-point drop since last year (34%) and the smallest percentage since PPIC began asking the question in June 2000. Today, residents in the Central Valley (36%), Los Angeles (30%) and Inland Empire (27%) are more likely to characterize air pollution as a big problem.
