Ford has revealed the 2020 Escape; the small SUV will make its first public appearance at the New York International Auto Show. Gasoline engine-powered models as well as the standard hybrid are available with all-wheel drive. This means: In Auto EV mode, the vehicle decides whether to run on gas or electric power.

Paradox 1 - Soot: There's an apparent emissions paradox with plug-in hybrids (PHEV): Driving longer distances on battery power means more cold starts as the internal combustion engine (ICE) stops and starts up again after the batteries deplete. A supplemental electric heater comes right to mind. Cold starts mean more pollution.
