A PHEV with only a 20-mile all-electric range is 62% lower (see printed page 95 in the 2004 study ).

The catalytic converter that keeps the ICE from being a gross polluter in conventional cars and hybrids however, isn't kept warm by the continual embrace of an ever-churning engine in a hybrid with all-electric range. Third-party and DIY converters can't muck with every system on a car. Cold starts mean more pollution.

Add batteries and grid-charging, and you get PRIUS+, a "plug-in" hybrid (PHEV). We believe that converting a small number of Priuses is the quickest, most cost-effective way to get people talking about PHEVs viability and benefits -- and support other PHEV development efforts.
