In the last three years, the number of inventions submitted to Ford’s legal team to be considered for patents has increased more than 25%. Still, by 2002 Ford only had approximately 30 hybrid patents. We stopped trying to create and fix one-off, niche vehicles, and it made all the difference in the world. —Ming Kuang.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries, proven for many years in hybrids to be safe, could go into PHEVs today -- they would be designed more like the ones Toyota put in its 2002 RAV4 EV compact all-electric SUV than like current hybrid batteries. Unfortunately you can no longer buy a new highway-capable production electric vehicle in the U.S.
