Compared to 2005-2006, it has probably doubled its presence. Levels of sulfur dioxide, a pollutant emitted largely by power plants, and chemical oxygen demand, a measure of organic pollution in the water, are down even as CO 2 emissions have continued to rise. There are bright spots in the data on China’s environment.

Research on ISA technology has now been ongoing for more than 10 years and includes a major ISA-UK project funded by the Department for Transport between 2001 and 2006.
