In order to counteract engine vibration and maintain smooth operation, the EA288’s crankshaft is connected to two gear-driven counter-rotating balance shafts that spin at twice engine speed. In other words, there is not a separate intake or exhaust camshaft. This means we have on the one camshaft one intake valve and one exhaust valve.

The new six-cylinder in-line engine comes with an intelligent form of turbocharging: assisted by the ISG at start-off, the electric auxiliary compressor (eZV) guarantees immediate high torque when driving off and accelerating, bridging the time before the large exhaust turbocharger cuts in.
