The Prius Plug-in is available in 15 states (California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia and Hawaii). The 2014 Prius Plug-in is also eligible for the State of California’s HOV lane sticker.

While in EV Mode, the Prius Plug-in is rated by the EPA to drive up to 11 miles. During EV Mode driving, the Prius Plug-in is rated at 95 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent). In hybrid mode, it has an EPA combined mileage rating of 50 mpg. It’s also capable of traveling up to 62 mph (100 km/h) using electric power alone.

Nissan is working on an electric car that it says is on track to have a 100-mile range and 26-minute charge time. My parents live about 180 miles away, which is well outside the range of most electric cars. That’s 7 cents worth of electricity per mile driven. With a 55KWH battery, range is only 157 miles.
