In the medium SUV EV space, rivals include our runaway best-seller Tesla Model Y , but also the more visually-striking Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. This again keeps the drive petrol-like ‘normal’ but it’s a trick missed not coming to a complete stop when off the throttle. Hyundai and Kia should take note.

Locally, Toyota has yet to even put a BEV on-sale and, of course, it makes a fortune out of CO2 and particulate-emitting diesel SUVs and utes. In response, Toyota points to the thousands of petrol-electric hybrids it has sold here and overseas. And it has confirmed the bZ4X BEV launches in early 2024 in Australia. But that’s 2024.
