Under standard conditions, the wheat containing the salt-tolerance gene performed the same in the field as durum that did not have the gene. Field trials were conducted at a variety of sites across Australia, including a commercial farm in northern New South Wales. Importantly, there was no yield penalty with this gene.

Shell’s recent agreement to develop oil shale in Jordan at a projected cost of $20 billion illustrates the potential cost of these projects. With technologically recoverable reserves estimated at about 800 billion barrels in the US—three times the size of Saudi Arabia’s proved reserves—oil shale offers vast development potential.

Syria’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources has announced a tender for investing in oil shale in the Khanaser area, 103 km in southeastern Aleppo, over an area of 150 km 2 divided into 14 blocks with geological reserves of 2.3 to 3 billion tons in each block.
