GMC introduced the 2022 HUMMER EV Edition 1. The HUMMER EV will get its energy from General Motors’ all-new Ultium batteries and power from Ultium Drive, GM’s proprietary EV drive units. In the video, auto journalist Jason Cammisa takes the Cybertruck up against rival electric pickups, the Rivian R1T and the GMC Hummer electric vehicle (EV). Since the industry has had a difficult time switching to 48-volt architecture, Tesla also sent a cheeky manual to other OEMs with the title “How To Design a 48-volt Vehicle.”

Production timing remains on track for the LYRIQ and GMC HUMMER EV, both of which will be powered by the Ultium battery system. The HUMMER EV will be revealed this fall, with production beginning in fall 2021. Despite the pandemic, product development work on GM’s future EV and AV portfolios continues to progress at a rapid pace.

GMC will be the only brand to offer three all-electric trucks, with the Sierra EV joining the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and SUV2. Sierra EV is 800 Volt DC Public Fast Charging capable at up to 350kW, enabling up to 100 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes—the best charging capability in the EV truck segment.

The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. The name isn’t its own brand; the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be sold as a model line within the GMC luxury truck brand.

A recent preliminary road test of the Raser Hummer H3E, an H3 converted with a range-extended electric powertrain ( earlier post ), demonstrated more than 50 miles of all-electric range. The electric Hummer H3E is a plug-in electric vehicle powered by Raser’s proprietary E-REV (extended range electric vehicle) powertrain. Jim Spellman.
